Jenny Hawkinson: NYC Collection A traveler is suspended in a space unlike any other individual. On the one hand, made painfully aware of his or her anonymity and perhaps loneliness, and yet on the other, blessed with a gift of seeing and experiencing a place with fresh vision. The NYC Collection came together during a two-week residency last July. My wanderings through the city were accentuated by objects found while walking the busy streets, waiting in the subway, sitting in Madison Square, and getting lost in Brooklyn. Piecing together the found fragments lent something more tangible and authentic than the photographs that I occasionally snapped. The artist as anthropologist became increasingly clear as I learned to understand the culture through what remained.
