Recently I have been interested in the remixing of old styles through figuration with that
of the new with abstraction and materiality. In this series I decided to focus on a culture I was immersed in growing up (Christianity) and the culture I relate to now (Queer Identity).
As is the case with many of the mash-ups or remixes in music today, I have decided to mix old and new from two contradicting ways of life by using ancient texts and modern means of communication, such as magazines and the Internet. As a child, the Bible had been a source of imagination for me. But as personal thought and a sense of identity began to develop, this imagination turned into contradictory thought. In my work, I attempt to weave text, photography, materials and paint together to form new stories and ideas for the viewer and myself alike.
My main interest in this project was the action of appropriating text directly from the Bible and editing it to give new meaning in today’s culture. To bring in a pictorial element, I appropriated from nature through photography found on the Internet (combining a sense of old and new). Appropriation allowed me to be very detail-oriented and at the same time allowed for creative freedom through materials. |
